14 Free Drawing Books for Beginners and Beyond

Drawing books can be a helpful way to jumpstart your drawing skills, find inspiration, and enjoy a fun art session. From figures, plants, animals, and more, drawing books can give you the step-by-step guide you need to draw things you had never imagined.

Luckily, you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get quality drawing books. In fact, you don’t need to spend any money AT ALL!

There are a lot of free drawing books that you can access right here on your phone or computer. No need to even leave your house or even leave the couch.

Just grab your drawing supplies and settle in for some great drawing tips from these free drawing books.

1. How to Draw Flowers in Simple Steps

This step-by-step flower drawing book is absolutely delightful. It’s extremely basic, which makes it great for beginners, while also leaving you with adorable results. 

What I love about this book is that it gives you the basic steps you need to draw a number of different types of flowers. Then, it shows you how to combine these flowers together into creative arrangements.

2. Drawing Butterflies Volume 2

Who doesn’t love butterflies? They’re beautiful and impressive…even as simple drawings. 

This butterfly book is fantastic. It includes sections about materials, parts of the butterflies, and drawing instructions for specific species of butterflies. 

This book is only 57 pages, but it packs a lot of great content in there. If learning how to draw butterflies is something that sounds fun to you, this book is definitely worth taking advantage of.

3. Meditative Mandala Making

Mandalas are SO relaxing to look at. Luckily, they’re relaxing to draw too. I personally love drawing mandalas in Procreate and use them as a way to unwind after a long day when I need a stress-free art session. 

Well, now you can get started drawing mandalas for free!

This book will not only teach you how to draw mandalas, but it will also give you some background knowledge on the background of mandalas and why they’re important.

It’s also sprinkled with meaningful quotes to give you inspiration.

If you’re an animal lover, this is the free drawing book for you. This is a deep dive into the wildlife around you, or that you always dream about and watch on National Geographic. 

One of the great things about this book is that it tackles the major components of art you need to know to be successful. Tone, contrast, texture, and more.

Instead of step-by-step tutorials that go in one ear and out the other, this book will give you the foundational knowledge that you can carry with you throughout your art career.

Calling all nature lovers! If you want a free drawing book that will help you draw the trees and leaves you like to see on your hikes and outdoor adventures, check this book out.

And, don’t worry – you won’t be stuck drawing one type of tree over and over again. You’ll get step-by-step instructions on drawing 35 different types of trees and leaves. 

Similar to the flower book, this book focuses heavily on step-by-step instructions. You won’t be left in the dark as you go through the process of drawing each component.

This is a really cute book that will walk you step-by-step through the entire process of drawing these adorable sea creatures.

If you’re a Fortnite fan, you’re in luck. There’s a free drawing book that will walk you through the process of drawing 10 of your favorite characters.

Even if you aren’t a fan of Fortnite, these characters are pretty neat and could be fun for you to sketch.

This next book strays really far from the step-by-step kids books we’ve been looking at. Instead, this is a textbook that deep dives into everything you need to know about the practice and science of drawing.

Even though it’s dense, it’s JAM packed with a LOT of amazing information that beginning drawers can use for many many years to come.

Remember that building a strong foundation of drawing knowledge will serve you really well as you continue to work on your art.

While I think robots are cool, I’m not always inspired to draw them…until now. This free book about drawing robots is ADORABLE.

14. Pen Drawing: An Illustrated Treatise

This is an old book, which you may have figured out given the use of the word “treatise.” But, hey, drawing is still drawing and this book has proved the test of time.

If you are interested in drawing in pen, you should definitely check this book out. 

WHat I especially love about this book is that it has a LOT of great examples for you to learn from. While offering these great examples, it also does a great job of explaining the techniques you need to know.
